Shear behaviour of hybrid fibre-reinforced SCC T-beams

Abstract: In order to evaluate the shear behavior of hybrid fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete T-beams, an experimental and theoretical research program was carried out. Three series of simply supported hybrid fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete T-beams subjected to four-point symmetrically placed vertical load were experimentally investigated. The influence of the following variables was studied: the fiber type, the fiber contents, the stirrup ratio and the flange size. Failures that resulted from the twenty-three T-beam specimen tests were consistently shear or shear-flexure failures except five T-beam specimen whose failure was dominated by flexural cracks. The results obtained from the study showed that hybrid fibers can evidently enhance the ultimate shear load. The addition of hybrid fibers in adequate contents can change the failure mode of a brittle shear failure into a ductile flexural mechanism. The mechanical behavior of the T-beam with hybrid fibers is much better than that of T-beam with mono-steel fibers. The influence of different flange size on the ultimate shear load of the T-beams should be considered. Three methods including “effective width”, “form factor”, “shear-funnel” for predicting the ultimate shear load of steel fiber reinforced SCC T-beams and the other two methods including “revised σ-w design method”, “revised σ-ε design method” for predicting ultimate shear load of hybrid fiber or steel fiber reinforced SCC T-beams were proposed. The ultimate shear load recorded experimentally is compared with the value obtained from the proposed equation. The method “revised σ-w design method” is more suitable for predicting the ultimate shear load of T-beams with stirrups and/or containing hybrid fibers, and the correlation is satisfactory.
